About The Author

Jonathan Bullock writes about how complex human systems actually operate.

He has spent his career in senior operating roles across technology, investment and high-growth businesses, including a decade at Google and four years as Chief Operating Officer of SoftBank International. His work has ranged across business operations, scaling the Google OKR approach, organisational design, strategy execution, transformation, M&A, integration and the practical machinery required to make large and fast-moving organisations work.

He has worked extensively across the United Kingdom, United States, Europe and Asia, including a decade in Silicon Valley, and has led teams and operating programmes across both established global companies, startups, scaleups, governments and top-tier sporting organizations including F1.

His broader work is organised around the idea of Operating Architecture: the structures, cadences, decision systems, interfaces and institutional machinery through which complicated human organisations coordinate themselves.

Solarian applies that perspective somewhere rather less conventional.

Rather than asking how a company should operate, it asks how a future human civilisation spread across many planets, moons, asteroids and artificial habitats might organise civil time without either imposing Earth's calendar everywhere or allowing every settlement to become temporally isolated from the others.

Jonathan is also the creator of Marian, a proposed operating calendar designed specifically for permanent human civilisation on Mars, and the author of The Mars Codex, a hard-science future-history series exploring the practical systems through which an enduring Martian society might emerge.
